Since opening in 1978, the International Museum of the Horse has been devoted to collecting and compiling the nation’s largest equine based collection for education and scholarly research. The Museum now sustains a collection of over 16,000 objects and photographs devoted to the history of the horse. Incorporated in to the Museum is the International Library of the Horse which is home to the archives of Mary Jane Gallaher, Mary Littauer, Purebred Arabian Trust among others, and over 8,000 books with 500 rare volumes from around the world.

The Museum accommodates requests regarding research, donations, loans, images, and rights and reproductions. Forms are available below to aid these requests but please send all inquiries to or call the numbers listed below.


The Museum’s and Library’s holdings are available to scholars, researchers, and community members by appointment Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Remote research may be conducted for a fee. Research requests may be sent to the above listed email address or please call 859-259-4232 to request an appointment.

The Museum considers loans for exhibit or research to other qualified institutions. To start your loan request please contact us at the email address listed above with your interests. 


Requests for publication quality images from Museum and Library collections can be accommodated using the image request form below. Please allow a minimum of 2 weeks for processing and delivery.
