THE REAL IZZIE AND THETIN LIZZIE
The early 1900s saw the transition from horsepower to gasoline engine power. Many families called their faithful carriage horse Lizzie. Naturally the family’s first car was often dubbed “Tin Lizzie.” At first the car was only used in good weather, and then perhaps just for a Sunday outing. The tin Lizzie was likely to get stuck or to boil over. The collapsible bucket came out from under the seat to fetch water from the creek for the temperamental radiator. Soon roads and engines were improved and autos were used everyday, while the horse was reserved for a Sunday drive
